School Board Policy 620

The school board believes the active participation of all parents and citizens of the community best serve learners. It is the school board's belief that volunteers help individualize instruction, promote school/community interaction, support school activities, provide multi-generational and multi-cultural experiences, and enrich the curriculum for all learners. To this end, the school board accepts and encourages the involvement and development of volunteers at all levels in the school district and within the appropriate programs and activities.

The school board recognizes that volunteers do not assume primary responsibility for instruction, but reinforce skills taught by the professional staff. Volunteers will be placed with careful consideration of how their presence supports the educational objective of a class or curriculum.

The school board recognizes that volunteers serve as a valuable community resource in assisting and supervising school sponsored programs and activities.

The productive utilization of volunteers requires a planned and organized effort. A volunteer administration process will be developed resulting in the recruitment, training, retention, and recognition of district volunteers. The district volunteer recruitment process will include an application and volunteer orientation.

District volunteers will be under the guidance of the district volunteer coordinator.

School districts are required to request a criminal background check on all individuals who are offered employment in the school; here at Nevis we also require this of all of our regular volunteers and field trip chaperones as well. The cost of such is the responsibility of the employee or volunteer. Background checks must be current within 12 months of first volunteering at the school.
