*****************************************************************************

We are now into the second half of the school year. The days are getting longer with more sunlight, and we are heading into the portion of winter where there IS light at the end of the tunnel!

February is “I Love to Read” month. We are excited by some of the upcoming activities we will be implementing to promote reading during this special month. Our activities will be as follows:

February 5-Read a shirt day. Students should wear a shirt with writing.
February 8-12 Magic School Bus theme. Students will fill the bus seats at the end of the elementary hall with reading during the entire school day.
Friday February 12-Mad Scientist presentation in the small gym by Mr. Gunn for elementary students
February 19-Author Will Weaver will spend the day here with elementary AND high school students.
February 26-Reader’s Theatre presentations in the small gymnasium

Every Friday during the month of February we will have reading giveaways. Students will be given a log to keep track of every 15 minutes of reading they do outside of the 8:30 to 3:30 school day. Their name will be entered in a drawing each Friday during the month of February for a reading giveaway.

March 1-5 will be our annual “Read Across America.” These festivities will include special dress up days and activities to celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday and once again promote a lifelong love of reading. Please stay tuned to our Tiger Details and elementary website to find out the special events for this week.

In closing, I’d like to share this thought, “Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest.” Mark Twain

MCA Practice tests for Nevis Elementary Students

Testing

The Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCA’s) are reading, writing, and mathematics tests that help schools and districts measure student progress toward the state’s academic standards.  As a parent, you can look over the following tests to see what your child’s MCA testing experience will be like.  I would encourage you to work with your child on the items for their grade level.  Keep in mind, these tests aren’t identical to the tests they will take, but they are similar.

Links to practice tests are below in PDF format. You will need a PDF viewer such as Adobe Reader to view the documents.
